How do monthly instalments work?
If you're on our Monthly Energiser or Monthly Smart Saver plan, you'll pay for your natural gas in monthly instalments in the lead-up to your quarterly bill.
To determine your monthly instalments, we estimate how much gas your household is likely to use over the next three-month billing period based on the information available to us. We then determine the estimated cost of that gas and divide it into three equal monthly instalments.
Each time your gas meter is read, we compare the cost of your actual gas usage against the instalments you've paid. We'll incorporate any credit or balance on your account into the instalment calculation for the next three-month billing period.
The way we determine your monthly instalments depends on your circumstances. We've outlined some common scenarios below.
I've switched to Kleenheat from another retailer
If you've lived at your property for a while and have signed up with Kleenheat, you'll usually switch from your other retailer to Kleenheat at the time of your quarterly meter reading. During the sign-up process, we receive historical meter readings for your property from the network operator and use this information to forecast how much gas you're likely to use over the next three-month billing period.
We base our forecast on the amount of gas your property used during the same period the previous year.
For example:
John has lived at his property for three years and been with another natural gas retailer the whole time. He signs up for Kleenheat in April, and switches to Kleenheat at his quarterly meter reading in May. His next quarterly meter reading will take place in August.
To determine his monthly instalments for these three months (May to August), we'll look at how much gas was used at his property during the same three-month period the previous year. Based on this, if we forecast John's gas will cost $150 over these three months, we'll divide this amount and set his monthly instalments at $50 per month.
John's meter will then be read in August, and we'll issue his quarterly bill. If John uses less gas than our forecasted amount, there will be a credit on his bill, and this credit will be deducted from the forecasted amount for the next three months. If he uses more gas than the forecasted amount, there'll be a balance on his bill. He will not need to pay this balance, as it will be added to our forecast for the next three months.
I've moved house or into a new build
If you've moved into a new home or a new build, there won't be any gas usage history available for your property. We'll estimate your first monthly instalments using the average natural gas usage of a WA household for that time of year.
After your first meter read, we'll compare your actual gas usage with our estimate, and recalculate your instalments for the next quarter, as explained below.
After 12 months, we'll begin calculating your instalments based on your household's historical usage, taking your seasonal usage patterns into account.
I've been with Kleenheat for more than 12 months
Once you've been with Kleenheat for more than 12 months, we'll estimate your gas usage for each billing period based on the amount of gas your property used during the same period in the previous year.
For example, if we're calculating your monthly instalments for the period from May to August, we'll use your property's gas usage between May and August last year to estimate your usage for the coming period.
What happens after each meter read?
Your gas meter is read by the network operator, ATCO Gas Australia, every three months.
After each meter read, you'll receive a Kleenheat bill showing:
- your meter reading
- your gas usage in energy units
- the monthly instalments you've paid during the billing period
- the balance on your account
- your monthly instalment amount for the next billing period, and the date it will be withdrawn each month.
If you've used less gas than expected during the billing period, the credit on your account will be incorporated into the calculation for your next three months of instalments.
If you've used more gas than expected, we'll include the owed balance on your account in your next monthly instalment calculation.
