Before installation, it's important to consider the best location for your battery to maximise its performance, safety and convenience.
Our installers will make sure the final spot ticks all the necessary boxes, but having a suitable spot already picked out will help them design the best battery system setup for your home from the start.
What to look for in a battery location
Your battery needs to be installed in a cool, dry and well-ventilated space, that’s not prone to extreme temperature fluctuations, and that’s away from potential fire hazards.
Perth’s dry and sunny climate means indoor installation (like within a garage) is often preferable to protect the battery from heat and UV exposure. Australian legislation requires that batteries never be installed in habitable spaces such as living rooms, bedrooms or kitchens.
Ideal locations for your home battery
Choosing the right spot for your home battery is essential to ensure it runs safely and efficiently. Your battery will need:
- about 2m x 2m of wall space
- protection from the elements (excessive heat, direct sunlight)
- proper ventilation.
Usually, the best spot for your battery will be in your garage. If you don’t have a garage, you can consider somewhere on the side of your house that’s shaded or protected from direct sunlight and heat sources like air conditioning units.
If neither your garage nor the side of your house is suitable, look for an area that:
- is sheltered from the weather and direct sun.
- has enough wall space and good airflow.
- is easily accessible for maintenance.
- is away from ignition sources or flammable materials.
- is not exposed to water or prone to flooding.
Restricted and unsafe locations
Australian safety regulations mean your battery cannot be placed in any of the following locations:
- Within 600mm of any exit, window, or ventilation opening into a habitable room (e.g. living room or bedroom)
- Under stairways, in ceiling spaces, or in wall cavities
- On roofs, unless specifically rated for it
- Near appliances or evacuation routes
Still unsure on the best spot for your battery?
When you request a quote through our Kleenheat Spark online tool, we’ll ask you to provide some photos of the location where you think your battery should be installed. Don’t worry if you’re still not sure of the best spot. Your photos will be carefully reviewed by our installers to check the location you’ve chosen is suitable and complies with safety regulations.
