8 affordable ways to stay cool this summer

As summer heats up, these clever, low-cost tips will help keep you cool without the need for air-conditioning or expensive household bills.

1. Get creative with your fan.

Yes, they are a cheaper alternative to air-conditioning units but may not always be effective in dry heat. For a cool breeze, either freeze some water bottles or place a bowl of ice cubes in front of a floor or desk fan. As the ice melts, then evaporates, it will cool you off. Adding salt will make it last longer.

2. Make use of the rice in your pantry.

Fill a cotton sock with rice, tie it and then leave it in the freezer for a couple of hours before placing it between the sheets. The rice will hold the coolness long enough for you to snooze off.

3. Use light and airy bedding.

Choose clothing and bedding made of natural materials such as linen, cotton and bamboo. These fabrics absorb sweat, breathe easily and will keep you cooler. And opt for lighter colours to reflect the warmth rather than dark colours that will absorb it instead.

4. Cold peas and damp towels.

The packet of peas from the freezer isn’t just good for eating and easing the pain on a strained ligament. They are also a great cooler bag when wrapped in a tea towel. Alternatively, wet a towel and drape it over yourself.

5. Cool your pulse points.

Pulse points are where blood vessels are closest to the surface of your skin. Cooling your blood with an ice cube, running cold water or through a cold compress over your wrists or neck will lower the temperature of your body. Couple this with rehydrating with water and you’ll be cooling down in no time.

6. Keep your blinds closed.

A lot of unwanted heat comes from your windows so to lower the temperature inside your home, keep your blinds or curtains closed between mid-morning and evening.

Pick blinds and curtains that are of a lighter colour to reflect the heat instead of absorbing it. In the cooler hours of the evening, open your doors and let the airflow through your home to help cool it down.

7. Stay fresh and cool with a mister.

Use a water spray mister on your face and body to create a fine mist. Keep a fan mister in your bag to stay fresh during the day or by your bedside table if you wake up during the night.

8. Reduce the use of appliances and turn off electrical items.

Appliances like an oven, stove, and electric objects can heat up your home. So, reduce usage and unplug items like your computer and TV when not in use.
