As summer heats up, these clever, low-cost tips will help keep you cool without the need for air-conditioning or expensive household bills.

1. Get creative with your fan

Yes, they are a cheaper alternative to air-conditioning units but may not always be effective in dry heat. For a cool breeze, either freeze some water bottles or place a bowl of ice cubes in front of a floor or desk fan. As the ice melts, then evaporates, it will cool you off. Adding salt will make it last longer.

2. Cool your cotton sheets

Lightweight and light coloured cotton sheets are breathable and perfect for ventilation and airflow in the bedroom. Try placing folded bed sheets and pillowcases in plastic bags then keep them in the fridge. Take them out after a few hours before bedtime and feel the instant relief of the coolness which will help you sleep better.

3. Make use of the rice and buckwheat in your pantry

Consider changing your pillows to buckwheat filled ones as they do not absorb heat, unlike cotton and down. Another trick is to fill a cotton sock with rice, tie it and then leave it in the freezer for a couple of hours before placing it between the sheets. The rice will hold the coolness long enough for you to snooze off.

4. Keep your blinds closed

A lot of unwanted heat comes from your windows so to lower the temperature inside your home, keep your blinds or curtains closed if there’s sun shining through. Pick blinds and curtains that are of a lighter colour to reflect the heat instead of absorbing it. In the cooler hours of the evening, open your doors and let the cool airflow through your home to cool it down.

5. Reduce the use of appliances and turn off electrical items

Appliances like an oven, stove and electric objects can heat up your home. So reduce usage and unplug items like your computer and TV when not in use.

6. Hang a damp sheet in an open window

The incoming breeze is cooled by the evaporating water and will be especially effective when the air outside is dry and cooler than the air.
