There’s a rumble in the region of Manjimup, as food tourists and wine connoisseurs flock to the home of “WA’s best steak sandwich” where they can sample “the largest tastings of South West wines in the world”. Caught your attention? These are some of the accolades causing a stir down at Tall Timbers, Manjimup.
According to chef Michael Hill, their signature dish is the award-winning steak sandwich. Like all their dishes, it is sourced from local ingredients, from the sourdough bread to the hand-cut Pemberton chips. The owners of the venue have a keen interest in promoting the food and wine of the region.
If your wine rack is looking dangerously bare, then you’re in the right place. Their entire wine list (it’s huge) is available to buy at cellar door prices. Want to sample the wines of the South West in one easy swoop? Tall Timbers has self-serve wine tasting machines. Yes, they do exist and it appears they’re quite popular! This is a fantastic place to kick back and taste single vineyard and reserve wines from boutique wineries that often have no cellar door.
Back to the food, are you a fan of truffles? With the truffle season starting, Michael says you can expect to see it being served on many Tall Timber plates. And their current menu has plenty to get you excited. Examples include starters of sticky Cajun BBQ lamb ribs and panfried marinated octopus. Mains vary from grilled red emperor fillet to slow-cooked duck confit and spiced rubbed rump steak. For the less hungry they have a ‘Something light’ menu with tempting salads and pastas. Dessert covers off all bases, including coconut panna cotta and classic creme brulee.
A couple of reviews from diners:
“Dined in the restaurant for our meal which we could not fault, the ambience amazing also! Then moved out the front to enjoy a glass of wine followed by tea and coffees in the afternoon sunshine. What a wonderful way to spend our afternoon. Will be back very soon!”
“A good selection of local vegetables beautifully cooked and presented. The gnocchi was one of the best I’ve ever tasted. For dessert I had the caramel crepes with mascarpone and fruit which was just divine. There was a huge selection of local wine by the glass, much of which is world class.”
Whoever coined the phrase “There ain’t no such thing as a free lunch” is mistaken, because the generous chaps at Tall Timbers offer all sorts of freebies during certain times. For example, free nibbles on a Friday and free kids’ meals on a Sunday with every adult meal ordered. Tall Timbers also provide discounted meals every weekday, for example Thursday’s offer is ‘Paddock and River Surf and Turf Manji Style’.
Open seven days a week, it’s a popular venue any time of the year. Whether preferring to dine al fresco or cosy up to the open fire during the cooler months, Tall Timbers is an active venue with plenty to keep you and the family entertained this winter.
