Kleenheat celebrates milestone with the Northern Territory

Kleenheat Gas celebrates the arrival of the 100th shipment of LPG on 29 June 2003 at the Channel Island import facility near Darwin.

This milestone has been 11 years in the making and highlights the role this facility plays in providing a vital energy source for the residents of the Northern Territory, north Western Australia and western Queensland.

The LPG from these shipments provides the gas for cooking, hot water, heating, plus commercial, industrial and automotive use for approximately one hundred and fifty thousand people.

The General Manager of Kleenheat Gas, Gary Ireson said, “These shipments of LPG ensure that residents of the Northern Territory have a reliable and cost effective energy source for their needs.”

To mark the occasion Kleenheat are arranging a viewing of the ship berthing and a tour of the facility at Channel Island from 7.30am on 29 June 2003, subject to the vessel not being delayed on arrival. Kleenheat are also inviting key guests, including the media and Japanese visitors from Marubeni, to a breakfast at the facility at this time.

Kleenheat opened the pressurised LPG import terminal at Channel Island in 1992. This unique facility consists of an underwater discharge pipeline connected to four large tanks with a combined capacity of nearly two million litres, or one thousand tonnes, of LPG.

“This milestone also signifies an operation that has been free of any safety incidents which is a credit to all staff involved,” Mr Ireson said.

The first import shipment arrived from the Japanese trading company Marubeni in May 1992 and since then shipments have arrived every 4 - 6 weeks.

Marubeni have supplied all of the import cargoes for the Darwin import facility, with most of these cargoes emanating from Santan, Indonesia.

Kleenheat also operates a depot at Winnellie that utilises the LPG from these shipments and allows for it to be transferred into smaller size containers, supplying the 25 Kleenheat agents around the Northern Territory with cylinders and bulk tanks for residential, commercial operations and Unigas sites for autogas.

Although Australia currently exports approximately 1.4 million tonnes of LPG we also import around 400,000 tonnes of LPG primarily to the large east coast market.
