‘Backyard cruise missile presents danger to community’
On 4 June 2003, ‘The West Australian’ printed an article “Concern over
cruise missile built in back shed” which depicted Bruce Simpson in a jet
go-kart, powered by what appears to be an LPG cylinder that was upside down.
Not only is the concept of a home made missile a serious danger to the
community, the requirements of Australian Standard AS1596 require LPG cylinders
to always be used and stored in an upright position.
Residents should be aware of the potentially hazardous situation they are
placing themselves and their neighbours in, by using a LPG cylinder in an
incorrect manner. By using it upside down, they are overriding many of the
safety features built into the cylinder.
Kleenheat Gas suggests a few simple safety steps to ensure safe LPG usage,
especially with the onset of a winter when LPG is used more frequently.
· Always store and transport your cylinders upright. Never store or use them up
side down.
· Do not store cylinders in a vehicle.
· Check for gas leaks by placing soapy water over the cylinder valve. If
there’s a leak, bubbles will be created. Contact 132 180 if this problem
occurs.
· Never store a spare cylinder beneath a BBQ.
· Store cylinder outdoors or in an outhouse or shed at least 1 metre from the
dwelling wherever possible. Cylinders greater than 12 litres in capacity must
never be stored or used inside a residential dwelling.
· When using a cylinder, ensure that the cylinder hose connections are properly
tightened.
· Never tamper with a cylinder or valve, and if it requires repair, take it to
a specialist, such as a Kleenheat Gas House or Agent.
By following these simple safety tips, customers can be assured of safe and
convenient use of LPG. Customers can find out more LPG safety, by simply phoning
the Kleenheat Customer Service Centre on 132 180, 7 days a week.
